SHANSHUI [carte blanche à Tengger part 1]

Active under the name of Tengger

since 2013, Itta (from Korea)

Marqido (from Japan) and their son Raii,

are a traveller and musician family

based in Seoul.

For five years they have been exploring

through their musical practice

and their travels (envisioned as spiritual

experiences in real environments) a rich

and diverse world, in which each of their

albums, performances, concerts and other

project invite us to wander.

Tengger’s most recent album, « Segye »

was released on dutch label

Guruguru Brain. It’s making was heavily

influenced by the proximity between

the recording studio and the location

where popular protests leading to

the destitution of president

Park Geun-hye took place, between

October and November of 2016.

For this new Carte Blanche on Sept*,

Itta and Marqido did craft an original

sound piece called « Shanshui »,

based on a concept that takes its roots

in Chinese Korean and Japanese

painting**. They deliver here their

very own interpretation of 山水, far away

from the sonic postcard that one could

expect, in the profound layers of tones

and hypnotic volutes and swirls of

Marqido’s modular synthesizer,

from which depths Itta’s Indian

harmonium luminous patterns arise,

followed by her ethereal voice,

seeming to echo and answer it.

The illustration was created by french

illustrator Paul Descamps, inspired by

Tengger’s sound piece and shanshui

painting style and concept.

*Sept is a virtual (and sometime

concrete) place dedicated to

the development and sharing of

experimental music practices.

It was initiated a year and a half ago

by Victor Donati, and is currently active as

an « antenna » of R22 tout monde

(a french webradio founded by

Khiasma independent art center,

based in Les Lilas 93260)

**The term sansuiga 山水画 is applied to

Chinese, Korean, and Japanese painting

which depicts an idealized image primarily

using the forms of mountains, rivers,

clouds and natural features such as

rocks and trees.

One of the three major subject categories

of Far Eastern painting, along with figure

painting jinbutsuga 人物画 and bird and

flower painting kachouga 花鳥画.

(Although the representation of landscape

had a long history in China,

only in the 11c did it become the

dominant subject of mainstream

painting.) Sometimes called the most

characteristic or the chief glory of the

entire Chinese painting tradition,

landscape painting is said to provide

not only a mirror of the natural world

but a means of expressing

human thought and abstract or

philosophical principles.

Phone [carte blanche à bela part.3]

Third opus of bela’s Carte blanche:

Phone [carte blanche à bela part 3]

Creating music as a tool of resilience

in hostile grounds.

Deprived of his personal computer and

principal work tool (forbidden inside the

military base), bela are  compelled to create

with the very less, under constraint.

In the previous post (cl4ss1f13d [carte blanche

à bela part 2] ) they recorded a mixtape

using an aircraft supply truck’s radio.

Since a few months, bela crafted a series of

tracks, with a rudimentary music app on

their secretly kept cellphone.

The following sound piece is compilation of

these short poems, that reveal a very regular

or even daily practice.

It intensifies the intimate relationship

with music, developed in the previous parts

of this carte blanche, and its capacity to

preserve, protect and heal in an endured

and violent environment.

cl4ss13d [carte blanche à bela part.2]

cl4ss13d (diesel refueler, 2351, 160118)

Le service militaire en Corée du sud

est à ce jour encore obligatoire pour

les jeunes hommes. 91% d’entre eux

se voient appelés et doivent effectuer

deux années de service sous peine

d’emprisonnement, ou de devoir

renoncer à leur nationalité.

Deux longues années dans l’une des

trois branches de l’armée (air, marine,

terre) souvent vécues comme une

grand violence, aussi bien

psychologique que physique

(L’ONG Asian human right évoque

a réalisé

«cl4ss13d (diesel refueler, 2351, 160118)».

This first « carte blanche » on

R22 tout-monde’s Sept antenna is an

opportunity to give the floor to young

artist MDBRKN (Paju, South Korea).

An exploration of the past, the present

and the future through the publication of

a variety of sound pieces and mixes.

For this first part of the carte blanche,

we take a look at 44:44 project,

made in collaboration with the artist

Together they form the BRKNBABY duo.

This project resulted in an exhibition at

Archive Bomm gallery in Seoul, back in

July 2017.

Tetraphobia – the fear of the number four

MDBRKN and MCLYBABY imagined certain

emotional states pingponged between

the two since last winter – anxiety,

depression, ennui, humiliation etc. –

physically brought together in a space.

Physical tokens take form: shards of mirror,

twigs, rainwater, waves, construction sites,

Shapeless sound fill the space for

44 minutes and 44 seconds, along with

a bit of repeating images.

Conjured sound and image lay

the sentiments bare on the floor.

« Sick of the relentless ennui, she questions

if she is human at all. She quit cussing like

she used to when she‘s exhausted;

it’s empty nowAfter crawling through

a narrow and filthy alley, she finds her

4x4m size room just to fall asleep.

She lost sense of either she is having

a nightmare or standing on her legs in

reality with this intense headache.

Digital clock at the wall reads AM 4:44;

she looks into the mirror – Is it a ghost or

a mirror? »
